This will be the 3rd year that I am participating in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine with my youth group. Each year, we spend the weekend together fasting; doing service projects; participating in games that simulate what it's like to go without food, water, and shelter; and coming closer to God. This year, we will be doing those things to help make a difference for some of the over 25 MILLION REFUGEES in the world today.
A REFUGEE is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. These are people who have lost loved ones, their homes, nearly all of their belongings, their jobs, and more due to circumstances beyond their control.
Our event this year will focus on the international refugee crisis: who refugees are, what events make people refugees, where they live, and how we can help. We will be giving of our time, energy, and resources to help save lives, provide basic necessities for families living in poverty, offer healing and hope to people in grief, shock, or despair, and extend Christ-like welcome and friendship to people building a new life in a new place. Created in God's image with hopes, dreams, possibilities, and potentials, we want our neighbors to be able to live and grow in ways that allow them to let the light of God shine into the world.
Our service projects will be with organizations that help and support refugees and the simulations will give us a glimpse into the refugee experience. We will listen to real-life stories of refugees in person and through film, games, activities, studying the Bible so that we can understand how God wants us to respond to the needs of others, engage in worship and prayer – all while FASTING so that we can realize that what these people are going through is difficult.
We are putting our faith into action during the weekend of February 24-25 to help our Syrian neighbors in need as we participate in World Vision's 30 Hour Famine.
Our goal is to raise $14,500 to help with World Vision's work with refugees!
Support Our Group as we participate in the Famine and seek to Let the Light Shine!
How the Famine works:
1. Students LEARN about refugees and what God's Word says about helping others.
2. We RAISE FUNDS (that's where YOU come in) to support World Vision's work in providing food, shelter, medical care, counseling, and education to refugees as they seek to build a new life for themselves.
3. We grow in FAITH and FRIENDSHIP through our shared experience of fasting and serving.
4. LIVES ARE CHANGED because of the money we've raised!
SUPPORT ME AND HELP REFUGEES AT THE SAME TIME:
Your DONATION means so much to me because you're helping me make a difference in someone's life. It's also your opportunity to respond to God's heart for the poor. Plus, your tax-deductible donation goes a long way.
Just $40 will help feed and care for a child for a MONTH!
