Mother Teresa once said, “If you cannot feed one hundred people than just feed one.”
This wisdom has always been an important challenge and reminder to me that when I’m confronted with the overwhelming needs of others my response needs to be focused on what I CAN DO about it, rather than what I cannot.
So, I’m applying this wisdom and my faith to respond to hard truth that there are over 25 MILLION REFUGEES in the world today. A REFUGEE is a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster; these are people who have lost loved ones, their homes, nearly all of their belongings, their jobs, and more due to circumstances beyond their control. While the statistics are staggering, I CAN DO something about this – WITH YOUR HELP!
Rather than focusing on the enormity of the problem, I'm choosing to focus on what I CAN offer to Jesus, trusting that he will take it, bless it, and use it for good in the world.
During the weekend of February 24-25, I’ll be leading and participating in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine event with students and adults at my church. Our event this year will focus on the international refugee crisis: who refugees are, what events make people refugees, where they live, and how we can help. We will be giving of our time, energy, and resources to help save lives, provide basic necessities for families living in poverty, offer healing and hope to people in grief, shock, or despair, and extend Christ-like welcome and friendship to people building a new life in a new place.
We will spend the weekend together participating in service projects with organizations that help and support refugees and simulations that give us a glimpse into the refugee experience, listening to real-life stories of refugees in person and through film, games, activities, studying the Bible so that we can understand how God wants us to respond to the needs of others, engaging in worship and prayer – all while FASTING so that we can cultivate a hunger for biblical justice and peace and grow in our compassion for and commitment to helping those in need around world. Our group hopes to raise $14,500 together to help World Vision save lives this year!
The Danielson Family (Melissa, Brian, Asher and Joshua) GOAL IS TO RAISE $3000 to help with World Vision's work with refugees.
Would you help us reach our fundraising goal by sponsoring us for this event and making a contribution to World Vision? Any amount you can offer will be helpful – if you cannot give $100 dollars then just give $1.
And would you please keep us and our group in your prayers as we spend our Famine Weekend serving, learning, worshipping, praying, playing, and fasting together? It’s my sincere hope that as this weekend will not only be life-saving, but also life-changing in powerful ways for everyone!
